Richard Edwin Harmon, 90, of Gardner, died peacefully Sunday afternoon with his family present in Heywood Hospital, Gardner.
Richard was born in Ellsworth, Maine on June 21, 1919, son of the late Wade Stanley and Huldah Lavinia (Seeley) Harmon, and lived in Gardner for most of his life. Richard was employed with various furniture manufacturing shops in the area as a lathe operator before retiring from the L&Z Kamman Co. in 1986.
Richard attended Gardner High School. At the age of 21, he enlisted in the US Army Infantry at Fort Devens on July 11, 1940. He received specialized training in the 60mm mortar and was assigned as a Light Mortar Crewman for the duration of his military service. He was a decorated World War II veteran having served in the Algeria-French Morocco Campaign, the Sicily Campaign, the Normandy Campaign, and the Northern France Campaign. He was slightly wounded in North Africa on April 2, 1943. He was honorably discharged on June 29, 1945.
Richard loved his family and was proud of his heritage. He was a woodworking hobbyist, an armchair golfer, and a crossword puzzle enthusiast. He was an avid reader, loved flea markets, Christmas, Spanish peanuts, and chocolate cake.
Richard is survived by one son; Wade Frederick Harmon and his wife Sharon Ann (McGrail) of Royalston, 2 grandchildren; Nathan Richard Harmon of Gardner, and Brandy Lee (Mallett) Lefsyk of Athol, 4 great-grandchildren; Jacob Richard Harmon, and Zachary Michael Harmon, both of Gardner, Sawyer Shon Lefsyk, and Bailey Shon Lefsyk of Athol, one niece and several nephews. Richard was predeceased by 2 sisters; Jennie Beatrice Swedberg, wife of David Oliver Swedberg in 1989, and Alberta Miller LaRoche, the wife of Leo Albert LaRoche in 1991, all of Gardner. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Charles Humphrey Harmon and Wade Stanley Harmon, Jr. who died in infancy.
Family and friends are planning to honor and celebrate Richard's life by gathering in the Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St., Gardner, on Friday February 26, 2010 for visiting hours from 8-10AM. His funeral service will be held in the funeral home, following the visiting hours at 10AM, on Friday February 26, 2010. Rev. Dan Meiners Pastor of Bethany Baptist Church, Ryan St., Gardner will officiate. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery, West St., Gardner following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's memory may be made to the Parkinsons Disease Foundation, 710 West 168th Street, New York, NY 10032.
